P. P. GOMATHI MEMORIAL EDUCATION TRUST(Registered on 25th November 2015 at Mangaluru)
Why this Trust
Ms. P. P. Gomathi, who had served as English teacher in
various Government Colleges in the erstwhile Madras Presidency and in
Karnataka, such as Victoria College, Palakkad, Government College, Mangaluru
(now University College) and Maharani’s College for Women, Bengaluru, and as
Principal in Besant College for Women, Mangaluru (on Deputation), had always
held the cause of women’s education and empowerment as an ideal and a burning
desire close to her heart.
Founding sponsors of
the Trust
In pursuit of that ideal and wish, her two younger brothers,
Dr. P. P. Divakaran and P. P. Sudhakaran, a nephew, P. A. Gopinath, and a
sister-in-law, Zarina Sudhakaran, decided to perpetuate her memory by starting
a Trust named ‘P. P. Gomathi Memorial Education Trust’ with an initial corpus
fund of Rs. 20,015,000/- (Rs. Twenty lakhs and fifteen thousand). It is
instituted at Mangaluru.
Main aim of the Trust
The basic aim of the TRUST is to financially help one girl
at a time, who is bright in studies but without necessary economic resources,
with a scholarship to successfully complete a career-oriented Degree course
chosen by the incumbent. She can be of any caste, religion, region, language or
status, but should be a resident citizen of India. ‘Girl’ will include specifically
for this purpose Trans-genders also who are living with a female identity.
The scholarship, which shall be known as P. P. Gomathi
Memorial Scholarship, will be in the form of an annual grant to meet any
expenditure relating to the academic course the candidate had joined.
Initially, the total annual value of the grant will not be less than Rs.
1,00,000/- (Rs. One Lakh only). This amount may be increased over the years by
the Board of Trustees depending upon the resources at its disposal.
One would be eligible to apply for the grant only after
securing admission to a course in an institution affiliated to a University
recognized by the University Grants Commission or the Government of India or
any of the State Governments, or in an Autonomous institution recognized by the
University Grants Commission.
From among the applicants, the Board of Trustees would
initially prepare a short list of three or four candidates on the basis of only
two criteria: 1) consistent excellence in the academic record up till then; and
2) overall poor economic background and resources. From the said list, the
final candidate shall be selected giving preference to the economic condition
over the academic record. In case of a tie at this stage, the applicant hailing
from Dakshina Kannada, Kerala and Karnataka in that order of priority shall be
preferred over those from the rest of India.
The TRUST would expect every recipient of P. P. Gomathi
Memorial Scholarship to sponsor on her own at least one student in a similar
situation, preferably acknowledging her gratitude to the TRUST, as and when she
is in a position to do so. This is a solemn commitment the TRUST would expect
from all the recipients of P. P. Gomathi Memorial Scholarship.
Other programmes of
the Trust

month of February, a public lecture by a highly eminent educationist, writer or
social activist.
b) Organizing in Mangaluru cultural programmes of upcoming
artists of talent and promise directly under the TRUST’s auspices, and
supporting similar programmes sponsored by the TRUST’s well-wishers, and
