Dr. G. N. Devy would deliver the first P.P.Gomathi Memorial Lecture We proudly announce that Dr. G.N. Devy has graciously accepted our invitation to deliver the inaugural lecture of P.P. Gomathi Memorial annual lecture series on Thursday, 16 th February 2017 in Mangaluru, hopefully at the University College Auditorium. The subject he would talk on is ‘The Question of Knowledge – how knowledge as an institution evolves, how it changes from century to century and how it is facing a crisis in our time’. It should give us, especially the students and the teachers, an idea of the intellectual and cultural challenges facing us, for they are the people who ought to keep the torch of knowledge burning. Needless to say, this question is the mother of all questions. Without knowing what knowledge is, we would end up knowing absolutely nothing. Ms. P. P. Gomathi was a dreamer all her life. She dreamed of a society in which there wouldn’t be any discrimination of any genre or shade. But she was too romantic a soul to realize that such a world resides only in the realm of imagination. She hoped that small steps each one of us takes in the right direction incrementally would take us one day to that ideal state. The way she fortified that belief against all the odds she faced in real life was with an unusually fervid commitment to her chosen field of work – teaching. Not surprisingly, she couldn’t realize her dream. But she left behind a huge circle of former students and acquaintances, their children and grandchildren, who would fondly remember for quite a long time to come the good work she had done and her belief in a less discriminatory society.
